5.22.21 Garden Update

The focus in our garden has been primarily on structural changes. All around us the fruit trees, berries, nuts, and veggies continue to grow and challenge us to finish our projects.

Let’s look at where we started. We took out the herb spiral and moved a bed over to make room for this new area. We made the single paths around the beds two pavers wide for better access.

We moved blueberry and strawberry plants to the longer bed in the back left corner and cleared to make more room for the new area.

After laying landscaping fabric and pea gravel, we are “finished” with the patio area. At least this is the state of things now – a comfortable area to sit in the shade in the afternoon. It just seems right to make room for people in the middle of this beautiful place. In the summer there will be tomatoes growing on the netting and all kinds of delicious things to snack on.

What is next for the garden?  The work continues with an upgrade to St. Fiacre’s area – he is in desperate need of a renovation =)   I would like that area to be a memory garden and have been collecting plants that remind me of people and pets that have passed away.  A much needed place of reflection and gratitude.

For reference – this is what this area looks like at the start of spring and what it looks like now – completely overgrown and mostly grass and two massive garlic chives that we will be relocating.

A little at a time each day, the work continues. It has been a challenge for me to go from basically inactive in 2020 to digging holes and lifting pavers, and I often need help. But today I am stronger than I was when I started and will continue to build up my strength.

Currently the garden reflects our desire to get things under control in more on than one way, to achieve a state of balance.
