We have four different apple trees that are growing at completely different rates. Three are fruiting this year and we picked most of the fruit off so their energy can go into growing stronger branches to support fruit. We kept a few fruit on each and bought small fruit bags to put on to protect them and keep the insects out.
Apples are ready to harvest between July and October and we have trees that ripen at different times – the earliest is Red Delicious in July/August and the Arkansas Black will ripen as late as October/ November and store through the winter. The trees are all dwarf varieties, but will still be a lot to process when they are full grown (about 15′ tall and about 8-10′ wide). We planned it so they ripen at different times throughout the season and will be manageable. I am keeping an eye out for an older cider press for the future =)
This one is a Red Delicious
Rome Apple
We picked all the fruit off this one so it could grow this year.
Golden Delicious
This tree hasn’t fruited in previous years. I was happy to see a few apples on it this year.
