Corn Bed & Onions

On the south facing side of our house, we put in a 4′ x 8′ bed for corn, beans and squash. This past weekend, we added some organic soil and compost and planted corn – one in each 12′ square. Then we planted onion sets every four inches along three sides – leaving the back of the bed free.

In a couple of weeks, when the corn has come up, we will be planting red beans to climb up the corn and pumpkins that we train to vine into the front yard.

The adventure here, is again, waiting to see what happens when we put seeds into the ground.  We have had great success with this bed in the past, a different success than we were expecting. The first year we planted mammoth sunflowers that were amazing, but quickly overshadowed the corn and beans. It was beautiful, but not for producing food. My husband is 5’11” so….

It is all a great experiment – and we embrace the experience of coming home each day to see how the garden has changed. However, we won’t be planting sunflowers this year =)
